Thirty Year Old Man’s Favorite Toys Awards – Lightning Collection Edition

Welcome, friends, followers, esteemed colleagues, and possibly some people I graduated high school with, to the first — and possibly only, depending on how many people think this nonsense has any value — Gordo Presents Children of Zordon’s “Thirty Year Old Man’s Favorite Toys Awards!” Or, as I like to call them, the Tyomftas. It’s a work in progress.

Listen. I’m not an expert toy reviewer or anything. I have reviewed toys in the past, but it has been mostly for shits and giggles.

Which is why this will ALSO be for shits and giggles!

CoZ Entry #023 – Sydney Drew

Sometimes I can’t think of an intro to write before the jump, so I just stare at the screen with what I assume is a blank, soulless look in my eyes. I could say something profound about how Pink Rangers don’t always have to be the “girly-girl” or the “pretty one” and how Syd is an example of how to execute both of those things while not overindulging and also balancing them out with other things, but you and I both know that already.

Wait, you don’t? Okay well fuck here’s Syd.

After a handful of seasons, Power Rangers had become accustomed to mixing things up with the introduction of the Sixth Ranger, someone outside the core team who gains Ranger powers one way or another. Sometimes they formally joined the team, sometimes they didn’t. When it came time to adapt GoGoV, the crew hit a bump in the road: aside from an ally who wore some face-revealing armor in a chunk of episodes, the show didn’t really have a sixth member.

So like any good American, they said, “Screw it, we’ll do it ourselves.” And that’s how we got Ryan, the first American-made Power Ranger. [citation needed]

“Wow. It took a global pandemic for me to get back on this shit. I think I’m gonna be a bit more productive for the time being, so look forward to more entries sooner rather than later.”

Those are the words I said at the end of my last post. Then a whole lot of crap happened. Just a lot of shit. In addition to that, I had to watch Megaforce again. Do you understand what I put myself through? Unbelievable.

CoZ Entry #017 – Rose Ortiz

Being a genius is hard (I assume). The outside world can sometimes pressure one into being the best at everything and always being right. An entire identity can be formed out of simply being “the brainy” one and make it difficult to relate to others. After all, if you spend all of your time simply knowing things and not really forming social hobbies, it can become isolating and you may end up making yourself known as a know-it-all that nobody wants to invite to parties.

Rose Ortiz was a genius thrust into a situation where she had to work with a team and develop friendships, and I think she turned out okay in the end.

CoZ Entry #014 – Chase Randall

Production of Power Rangers moved to New Zealand after the Disney buyout. As such, many of the actors they hired were natives faking an American accent. Some actors were better at it than others. Given the circumstances, one would assume they’d introduce a Kiwi Ranger at some point just to spice things up and eliminate any awkwardness that may come from trying to mask an accent.. Besides Katherine and Xander, foreign Rangers were basically non-existent, and it was surprising that the show had never truly taken advantage of its new filming location.

That was until we got Chase Randall: the Kiwi so Kiwi he had a Kiwi on his skateboard.

CoZ Entry #011 – Leo Corbett

The Rookie Red trope gets its name from Power Rangers, and for obvious reasons. It’s not uncommon for the Red Ranger to be the unestablished one in the group, or inexperienced, or downright lacking any skills that one would attribute to a superhero, but wind up becoming the most prominent and powerful member of the team. Rangers dipped its feet in the water with Andros the Red Space Ranger, though he was very experienced as a Ranger, just not with that particular group.

When the show started “fresh” (sort of) by ending the colloquially-known Zordon Era with Lost Galaxy, they luckily had the budget to dive right into something new. In this sense, one could consider Leo Corbett – a dude who wasn’t even supposed to go to space, let alone become a superhero – the first true Rookie in Red.
